Osnovala ga je žena muslimanka 859. godine i u njemu najstariju biblioteku, piše Radio Sarajevo.
Biblioteku Univerziteta Al Qarawiyyin restaurirala je u protekle tri godine kanadsko-marokanska arhitektica Aziza Chaouni.
Biblioteka čuva kolekciju od 4.000 rijetkih knjiga i starih arapskih manuskripta koje su pisali nekadašnji studenti fakulteta. Sudeći prema agencijama, manuskripti uključuju i verziju Kur’ana iz 9. stoljeća i islamsku pravnu filozofiju filozofa Averroesa.
Univerzitetski kompleks i džamiju osnovala je Fatima Al-Fihri, koja je iskoristila bogatstvo svog oca koji se doselio iz Al Qayrawana ili modernog Tunisa danas.
U francuskom video o “zlatnim godinama islama”, dokumentarcu kojeg je snimila francuska televizija France 5 Channel, Al-Fihri je opisana kao mlada žena fascinirana znanjem i puna znatiželje.
World's Oldest University?!
So many people think that Oxford, Cambridge, or Harvard are the oldest universities in the world. But in reality, the oldest operating university exists in Fez, Morocco. It was built by a Muslim woman….and its alumni list include Jewish philosophers.When I heard about this, I was surprised.The past of Muslim nations is so different from their present. This is the sad truth that I can't ignore.But this example of past greatness, focus on education, and inclusion (despite some regressive topics), can be a sign of hope for today's Muslim and non-Muslim generations.
