British Council Job Opportunities: Become an Examiner

British Council employs two types of examiners: IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examiners and University of Cambridge English examiners.

British Council employs two types of examiners: IELTS (International English Language Testing System) examiners and University of Cambridge English examiners.

IELTS examiners

The British Council Examinations Services are looking for suitably qualified and experienced individuals to join our team of IELTS Examiners. Applicants should be able to work on Saturdays/Sundays and travel outside Sarajevo if necessary. They do not have to be native speakers but their level of English must be at level C2 of the Council of Europe Framework (equivalent of IELTS band 9). We hope to establish long-term co-operation.

You will need:

  • An undergraduate degree or a qualification which can be demonstrated to be equivalent to an undergraduate degree.
  • A recognised qualification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
  • At least 3 years full time (or equivalent part time) relevant TESOL teaching experience (post certificate level qualification).
  • The required professional attributes and interpersonal skills.

This is only applicable for potential candidates who live and/or work in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For other countries we suggest you to get in touch with your local British Council office and inquire about becoming an examiner.

Cambridge English Examiners

We occasionally recruit oral examiners for the University of Cambridge English Examinations.

You must:

  • be educated to first degree level or equivalent
  • have a recognised relevant teaching qualification*
  • have at least three years’ relevant teaching experience
  • be aged over 25 and under 65 on appointment
  • demonstrate linguistic accuracy
  • demonstrate communicative ability
  • have clear diction, including intelligibility outside the region/country where examining takes place.

If you are interested in applying, and meet all these requirements, please contact us. Successful applicants will be required to undergo induction and attend an unpaid training session.

*an applicant may be exempt from formal teaching qualification in the light of considerable teaching experience supported by positive references. Cambridge ESOL will take the final decision in such cases.
